Twitter Marketing | How To Use Twitter Hash Tags

If you are not using hash tags in your tweets, then you are underutilizing the power of Twitter. A hash tag is simply a way to specify a particular keyword in a peep. Let’s say you are a gardener and you post a peep recommending a particular type of compost and want to emphasize that keyword. You would house a “#” sign in adjoin of the keyword, like this: #compost.


This will cause your peep to show up in lists of tweets for that hash tag. A well loved site for conducting research and learning about hash tag trends is hastags[dot]org. This type of web site provides a service to many people by compiling data for particular keywords (in the form of hash tags) used in tweets. For example, the hashtags[dot]org site will show trends for hash tags. Use trend data strategically by specifically using hash tags related to your industry that show a strong upward trend

If you are new to Twitter, reading other users’ tweets may sometimes seem like trying to know a foreign language, given the many abbreviations that are used. As an example, currently the hash tag “gls” is being used in some tweets to stand for “Games Learning Society.” If you saw this hash tag and did not know what it meant, you could consult the web site wthashtag[dot]com, which is a user editable encyclopedia of hash tag meanings.

Thinking from an SEO perspective, there is also the possibility that Google or other search engines could give high visibility to a web page that contains tweets or other data for a particular hash tag, which gives you another roundabout way of getting seen. For instance, let’s say that Google really likes the page on hashtags[dot]com for a particular hash tag and ranks it on the first page for searches for that keyword. If you have recently tweeted using the “compost” hash tag, then someone clicking the link from Google might see your peep on the subject. Take advantage of this situation by posting tweets that are extremely compelling or useful, or that in some other way influence people into learning more about who you are.

Don’t abuse the hash tag concept. If you overuse them you may end up turning people away from you by coming off as a junk spammer. Make sure your hash tags are very noteworthy, and use them in posts that grant solid information on the subject. If our hypothetical Twitter user uses the “compost” hash tag, then the post needs to contain information about compost. Avoid doing anything that makes the appearance you are trying to abuse the Twitter system.

Don’t expect the use of hash tags to instantly explode the number of followers you have or the number of impressions your tweets receive. Hash tags are simply one component of using Twitter, with using Twitter being one component of running an Internet marketing campaign. The more adept you are at using the various components of your Internet marketing campaign, whether that’s Twitter or your blogging platform or no matter what, the more effective your campaign will be.
